Government – Local and National policy

Working with your MP can be a powerful way of helping to improve epilepsy services and raise awareness of SUDEP across the country. As a charity we engage with politicians to raise awareness of our concerns regarding epilepsy care and to raise awareness of SUDEP and epilepsy risks.

However on a local level, we need you to get involved in order to make a difference as you know the issues important to address in your local area regarding epilepsy and SUDEP. You can also build a relationship with your local MPs to address these issues over time and help them represent them in Parliament.

For more information about how to get involved with your local MP, see the guide in the useful resources section.

Epilepsy Debate in Parliament

February 2015 saw a Parliamentary debate on epilepsy care and services. We asked for your help in contacting MPs to raise awareness of our concerns and to encourage them to speak on our behalf – which a huge number of you did. Because of your hard work, the voices of those bereaved by epilepsy were heard loud and clear throughout the debate, overshadowing the other issues raised.

While the House of Lords wasn’t full like it can appear during Prime Minister’s question time, the MPs who showed their support did a great job of raising awareness of SUDEP & Epilepsy risks; highlighting the urgent need to make changes to reduce avoidable mortality. The live streaming of the debate via a range of platforms also meant that people across the country with an interest in epilepsy heard about the Charity, our work and our current concerns.

You can find out more about the debate here, and do get in touch if this is something you would like to be involved with in future. Likewise if you have ideas or questions about involving your MP in the work we do, please get in touch [email protected].
