Epilepsy Bereaved was founded in 1993 as a self-help
group. It became a charity in 1995 because of an overwhelming lack
of information and action to reduce epilepsy-related deaths. Epilepsy
Bereaved was the first organisation in the UK and internationally
to champion the SUDEP cause and is the leading organisation worldwide
on this issue.
Our aims are:
To support families affected by SUDEP and other
epilepsy deaths
To raise awareness of SUDEP and other epilepsy deaths through
education and by influencing decision makers
To promote research into SUDEP and other epilepsy deaths
Epilepsy Bereaved is based in the UK and works
with other epilepsy organisations as part of the Joint Epilepsy
Council of the UK and Ireland. We are uniquely placed to address
the issue of prevention of deaths and information and support for
bereaved relatives.
Epilepsy Bereaved is advised by a panel of epilepsy
experts and specialist pathologists. We therefore have access to information
and advice. We aim to assist families understand the investigation
and cause of death as well as advising on information, prevention
of SUDEP and research.
