International

In the UK Epilepsy Bereaved has spearheaded the establishment of specialist services dedicated to SUDEP and epilepsy deaths and is very aware of the unmet need in most other countries worldwide. Our aim within our limited resources is to act as a catalyst for action internationally.

Epilepsy Bereaved marks 10 years of progress in reducing risks

Does Epilepsy Bereaved work internationally?

Epilepsy Bereaved was the first organisation to promote SUDEP as an urgent problem. Generally awareness of SUDEP is less developed outside of the UK. Although we are keenly aware of the unmet needs of bereaved families outside of the UK and Ireland, our existing resources limit our international activity. We try where we can to help the development of interest in SUDEP internationally and have established joint working with a sister organisation in Canada, epilepsy organisations in Ireland and Australia and a self-help group in the Netherlands.

Since its foundation Epilepsy Bereaved has:

Achieved an international profile for our work.
Set up the first international workshop of SUDEP Experts in London 1996 producing a special supplement on Sudden Death in Epilepsy in a leading medical journal, Epilepsia and leading in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland to a Government funded National Report on Epilepsy Deaths.
In 2002, received recognition in the Lancet, the leading international medical journal, following our publication of the National Epilepsy Deaths Report.
Presented papers to epilepsy specialist audiences internationally since 1996 raising the profile of SUDEP internationally at meetings in the following countries:
USA South America
Australia Poland
France Warsaw
Malta Ireland
Wales
Presented to specialists in the investigation of deaths - Royal College of Pathologists, UK - Australian national conference
During 2005 we will be giving presentations at: Paris (Neurology conference), Ireland SUDEP meeting
