Epilepsy, for most people, is a long-term condition but today the outlook for the majority is very good. As with other long-term conditions, such as asthma and diabetes, having epilepsy can impact on quality of life, particularly if seizures are not controlled. It can also carry with it associated health risks.
This part of the website provides general information about risks associated with epilepsy and ways to minimise them. Because of the specialist nature of this area of the website, detailed information is provided on the risk of SUDEP. The causes and types of epilepsy vary so much from person to person that people with epilepsy and their carers are advised to discuss the subject of individual risks with the doctors and nurses involved in their care so that information can be put into perspective according to each person’s circumstances.
People with epilepsy and carers are encouraged to contact epilepsy organisations listed on the Joint Epilepsy Council website (CLICK HERE to go to their website).
