Our Help for Hope pledge - ask your MP!

Please email prospective Members of Parliament and ask them to make this pledge now

If elected, I will meet with SUDEP Action to talk about rising preventable deaths and harms to people with epilepsy.

Following the General Election on 4 July, Parliament will be full of newly elected MPs. Many of these will be sitting in the House of Commons for the first time.

In order to keep the issues faced by those bereaved due to epilepsy – or living with the condition –  at the forefront of public agendas, we are launching our Help for Hope pledge.

 Why this matters now

We need the support of MPs to further our work and our causes. It’s also important that MPs hear first-hand some of the stories of families who have lost loved ones to epilepsy.

  • At least 21 people with epilepsy die every week. Most are young. And otherwise in good health.
  • Up to 80% of epilepsy deaths are thought to be preventable.
  • One in five people with a learning disability have epilepsy. This population dies 10  years younger than people with epilepsy and any other co-morbidity.
  • The voices of those bereaved due to epilepsy deserve to be heard.

Why do we need the support of MPs?

  • To bring about changes in laws, regulations and the governance of medicines to reduce patient harms.
  • To support and fight for those living with epilepsy - so they receive better care and greater access to medical services, to live their best lives.
  • To promote SUDEP and seizure safety and risk awareness for all, including in primary care settings and pharmacies.
  • To invest in research and care systems that recognise and value patient safety.

What we would like you to do

Please send an email or write to your Parliamentary candidates (their contact addresses and emails should be on their campaign literature and digital platforms) and ask them to say ‘yes’ to our Help for Hope pledge.

They can do this by emailing us at [email protected]

We will then contact those who have pledged their support individually and invite them to a meeting with us before SUDEP Action Day on  16th October 2024.

Please also, let us know who you have contacted to sign the pledge by emailing us at [email protected]

Thank you!
